The last three tracks are all astonishingly brilliant, "Cupid's Trick", "2:45 a.m." and "Say Yes". "Between The Bars" is beautiful, "Pictures Of Me" has a Beatles influenced bounce, although lyrically it's not so bouncy. Next comes one of those "Ballad Of Big Nothing" is Elliott Smith at his best. The opening pair of songs "Speed Trials" and "Alameda" are great but perhaps not as instant as the true classics on here. His delivery is paradox of strength and vulnerability, sort of assured but not sure. Whilst the recording techniques aren't necessarily groundbreaking - double tracked vocals and guitars, for example - Elliott Smith makes a sound all of his own. It was the right album at the right time and from start to finish this album delivers. For this to come out in the midst of all that, in 1997, was a real breath of fresh air. I was getting pretty fed up of the music that was being offered up in the late '90s - Britpop really wasn't my bag and it dominated the landscape.
